Ib (pronuced Eeb) is the silent protagonist of the horror game Ib and the first controllable character in the game. She, along with Garry and Mary (v1.04), is one of the few characters that the player can control.
She is a short, 9 year old girl, with dark hair, red eyes, and wears a white long-sleeved shirt adorned with a red bow, that is similar to Mary's neckerchief, matching her skirt. She also wears black knee-high socks and red shoes. Her attire is very similar to a school uniform.
Ib's personality varies depending on the player's choices. In other words, Ib's personality is unknown, because it is built up by the player. The player's choices of her personality affect the game's ending (ex. The choices the player makes affect the way Ib talks to and acts towards Garry or Mary). However, Ib is shown as extremely brave, quiet, nice, and kind. She is also very sensitive to others as she felt sorry for Mary when she had to leave her behind. Unlike Garry, she doesn't express or show her feelings too much. Because of her age, Ib is very innocent and naïve. She can't read certain words in the gallery and doesn't understand much of what is going on. As an example, in any of the endings where Garry dies, Ib, upon seeing his body, will think that he is "sleeping."
Ib picks her rose after she goes into the Fabricated World. After she picks it, it will have only 3 petals left and after reviving it, an inscription THIEF will appear on the floor printed with red paint/blood. Her rose is red and is symbolic for love and compassion which is very known in flower language. Unlike Garry's rose, her rose has only 5 petals. This may be because she is younger, and thusly, weaker than Garry.
Also, it is possible that Ib's rose is colored red due to her personality. Red describes her kindness, energetic spirit (that children usually have), bravery, liveliness and strong mental rank.
Role in the gameEdit
She visits Guertena's museum with her parents one day. Her mother gives her permission to look at the art on her own, and Ib goes on to explore the museum by herself. Eventually, she gets transported to the Fabricated World (read as "??? World", depending on whether or not Garry survives). After exploring a bit, she eventually finds a red rose. The rose is linked to her life, and if it dies, so does she. She doesn't understand this however, because she can't read the sign next to the rose.
As Ib keeps going through, she will find an injured Garry holding a small key tight in his hand. After you pick up the key, you will be able to interact with him and will be given two options; to call out for help or massage his shoulders. Since he, just like Ib, is connected to a rose, which is being torn by the Lady in Blue, nothing will help him until Ib heals his rose.
The way Ib behaves towards Garry is chosen by player, but is partially controlled by the game. Ib seems to love Garry in the same way he does. Also, as the relationship with Garry can be chosen, it can be chosen with Mary as well, but there is no bond between the two of them. Ib seems to like Mary, since Garry said Ib may be sorry for leaving Mary there after he defended her from Mary once he found out/remembered the truth about her being a painting. Even if Ib understands Mary is a painting, she doesn't think about how dangerous Mary can be.
When Ib escapes with Garry in the sketchbook, she soon goes to the Toy Box after Mary pushes them into it. Depending on the conversations between Mary and Ib, she may or may not be able to find her rose. If there are no petals above Ib after she wakes up, her rose can't be found. If the petals of her rose are seen above Ib, they will be lead to the rose. If the pink key is picked up before the rose, the same thing will happen as if there is no rose in the Toy Box, so note that you must pick up the rose before taking the key.
The different choices the player chooses will affect which ending you will have, either bad or good.
Ib treats Garry as he does to her. She likes him very much and feels safe near him, and Garry feels the same way, sometimes even needing Ib for his own protection and sanity. Garry is very important to Ib, which is proven by Bond pointing. If the bond has reached 8 points, Ib even goes so far as to give him her precious hankerchief when he cuts his finger. Since the player chooses most of Ib's choices with Garry, not much can be told about their actual relationship. However, in the True/Good ending Ib acts pleasantly to Garry, trying to prove how much she cares about him and reciprocates his feelings to her.
Ib, at first, is glad to meet Mary so she can continue the search for a way out together. She thinks of Mary as her best friend/sister, just as Mary feels towards Ib. Even though Ib thinks of Mary as her sister, she is closer to Garry since they have known each other longer. She acts almost the same way towards Mary as she does to Garry, but doesn't trust her much. Ib feels sorry after leaving Mary and burning her.
Ib arrives at the art gallery with her mother and father, and asks if she can go off by herself. Her mother complies, as long as she doesn't get herself into trouble. When the lights go out, they, along with everybody else in the art gallery, disappear. In the Fabricated World with Garry, she sees a portrait of her mother and father ("Couple"), and is noticably disturbed. Mary also asks her about her mother when they are separated from Garry. If Garry lives and you're about to jump into the painting with him, Ib's fake mother comes (whom Garry cannot see). If you choose to go with her fake mother, you get the "Ib all alone" ending. In every ending you escape the art gallery, her mother has some sort of role, usually telling Ib it's time to go or talking to her about the paintings.

Not much is known about Ib's relationship with her father, as he speaks very little and is barely spoken of. Ib came to the art gallery with her mother and father, and her father goes to the front desk to get some pamphlets. He disappears along with everybody else when the lights go out. In the art gallery with Garry, Ib sees a portrait of her mother and father ("Couple") and is noticably disturbed. If you escape the art gallery, you can find her father looking at the paintings.
- Due to her age, many of the books she reads have words she does not understand/can't read (She may not be able to read kanji at her age). These are shown as "???". The "???" disappear when she is with Garry, as he can read them for her.
- At one point, her inablility to understand certain words is used to censor some naughty words in a book she finds, which Garry promptly closes and tells her not to read until she's older.
- Ib looks braver than Garry due to her age. It is assumed that Ib's age affects the way she sees things in the Fabricated World. Since Garry is older, he understands what things in that world are capable of and is aware of the unusualness of the live paintings. Oftentimes, Ib will see the blue dolls as bunnies due to hallucinations. Since Ib is only 9 years old, it's possible that everything she sees in the Fabricated World look ordinary since she sees them as new sights and experiences, though this is only a theory.
- It's unknown if Ib loves Garry in a sibling-like way or a romantic way. It is more general that she sees him as older brother.
- When Garry dies, Ib thinks he's sleeping, either because she is too young to know he is actually dead, or because she does not want to accept what has happened to him.
- Her name "Ib" may be short form or based from the japanese word "Ibara" which translates back to rose. However the word ibara is commonly associated with bad luck.
