Spoiler alert! This article may contain spoilers.

The Violet Area is one of the areas of the cursed gallery in the game Ib. As the name implies, the entire flooring of each room in the area is violet.

Walkthrough[]

The walkthrough for the Violet Area contains some guidance through the Brown Area as well, due to the fact that the player will be constantly switching perspectives between Garry in the Violet Area and Ib in the Brown Area throughout this portion of the game. To avoid confusion, the walkthrough contains information for both areas.

It should noted that the True Guertena Exhibit is unlocked after Ib retrieves the Black Key at the end of the Dungeon, which is not available during the first play-through; however, the player may still have Ib examine as many of Guertena's artwork as possible, as doing so will unlock them in the True Guertena Exhibit if the player later transfers the data to the next file (only works if Ib successfully escaped the Fabricated World).

Past the Safe Room[]

After going down the stairs south of the Safe Room in the Gray Area, Ib will enter the Violet Area. A violet door can be seen in an alcove near the bottom of the stairs, but it's locked. Having Ib look through the peephole will reveal nothing, as the room is too dark to see anything. Continuing on to the right will lead Ib near the outskirts of a a rope maze.

Rope Maze[]

The Rope Maze is an optional mini-game and something of a trap; however, the paintings inside the maze can be unlocked in the True Guertena Exhibit if Ib reads them.
Once Ib enters the Rope Maze, she and Garry will find themselves locked inside the maze, as the entrance becomes obstructed with a strand of rope. Idle headless statues stand nearby, save for the yellow one, which had started to move and become hostile right after Ib entered the maze. There are also three paintings of buttons hanging on the back wall: one red, one blue, and one green. Reading the Blue Button painting will open the exit to the Rope Maze. Reading the Red Button painting will cause the red headless statue to become hostile and start moving. Similarly, reading the Green Button painting will cause the blue headless statue to do the same. If the player is aiming for the best ending, then Ib should read the bookshelf before exiting the maze; doing so will strengthen Ib's bond with Garry by one point. Once Ib escapes the maze, the exit will become blocked off by yet another strand of rope, which keeps Ib and Garry safe from the headless statues.

The Lighter[]

As Ib continues up the rightmost path, a save point can be seen at the top of the screen; it is recommended to save at this point, and the save point may be used however many more times as preferred before the Ib is done with this room. To the right of the save point is the Milk Puzzle painting. If the player is aiming for the best ending, Promise of Reunion, Ib should examine this painting with Garry. If she does, he would ask her if she knows about milk puzzles; regardless of the answer that Ib chooses, Ib's bond with Garry will strengthen by one point. To the left of the save point is the Fleeting Thoughts on a Moonlit Night painting, and while Ib may read this now, the player can have her come back later for an optional small bonus conversation. Ib should then head south into a small corridor. Past it is a small room with a cord on the rightmost side and a headless statue blocking the exit opposite to where Ib entered. Ib should pull the cord, and upon examining the headless statue, Garry will move it out of the way. Upon exiting the small room, Ib will find herself back in the alcove near the bottom of the stairs. To the right of the alcove are wall writings that didn't initially exist. The wall writings ask for the name of the largest painting in the Guertena Art Gallery. Ib needs to answer "Abyss of the Deep" to obtain it as the password in order to unlock another door later. Ib should then go north back through the small room and out again so that she ends up at the top of the area. To the left is the locked door that requires the password; Garry will enter the password, and the door will unlock.

In the next room, the Separation painting can be seen in the center of the back wall. Ib may read a book in on the shelf in the top-left corner, most of which she cannot understand because of its adult-rated content, and Garry will promptly confiscate the book from her soon after she picks it up. The player can have her come back to this book later for yet another optional small bonus conversation. After Ib examines Separation, the lights will go out. Garry will become anxious and ask if Ib is still in the room. If the player is aiming for Promise of Reunion, Ib should choose to say that she's here or that she's not here and avoid choosing the silent option; either of the first two options will strengthen Ib's bond with Garry by one point. After the player chooses an option, Garry will attempt to light his lighter. However, before he can, the lights immediately go back on, accompanied by a disturbing noise. The room now appears to be in a mess, as writings of varied sizes and colors are strewn across the walls and floors; the writings exhibit feelings of distress and implore the perpetrator—in this case, Garry—to not commit murder, implying that the paintings in the cursed gallery are afraid of Garry's lighter and, therefore, afraid of fire. If Ib examines Separation again, in place of its title will be the word "S T O P." After Ib exits the room, red text proposing an opposition to possessing fire in the gallery can be seen written over the walls and hallway. At this point, using the save point is recommended. Farther towards the right are sets of red footsteps that Ib should follow, which lead to an entryway to the next area.

Meeting Mary[]

In the next area, Mary will inadvertently run into Ib and knock herself over, surprised at meeting Ib and Garry. Garry will ask if Mary is OK before introducing himself and Ib to her. Mary, seemingly to ignore Garry's presence, will take the pleasure of her first meeting with Ib and prompt the latter to choose from two ways of acknowledging the former. Whichever answer Ib chooses will not affect the game's ending. After Ib heads to the right, a vase will come into view; Garry will not let Ib continue north until she heals their roses at the vase, regardless of whether or not they are damaged. At the vase, Garry will advise Mary to take care of her rose, too, but Mary, completely ignoring Garry, will excitedly exclaim about her interest with the different rose colors and how much she likes each color. Afterwards, to continue the game's main storyline, Ib should head north; otherwise, the player may have Ib head back to the previous area for the optional small bonus conversations mentioned in the preceding section of the walkthrough.

Naïvety[]

The small optional bonus conversations have no affect to the game's ending. After Ib heads back to the previous area, she may reexamine Fleeting Thoughts on a Moonlit Night. With Mary now part of the group, she will make her own comments about the painting in addition to Garry's. Having Ib examine the mirror near the door to Separation's room will prompt the mirror to shatter, which implies that the mirror does not reflect false humans—in this case, Mary. If Ib heads back into the room in which Separation is displayed, she may read the book on the top-leftmost shelf; Mary will be curious about its contents and request that Garry read the book to them, to which Garry will deny her, and from that response, Mary will express her displeasure. Afterwards, Ib, using the save point being optional, may head back to the area where she met Mary and continue north to continue the main storyline.

Flowers of Jealousy[]

In the next part of the area, a sign can be seen hanging in the center of the wall. It reads, "Which one is it really?" and likely refers to the truth about the contents of a room that Ib will soon visit. Ahead, two violet doors and the painting Flowers of Jealousy can be seen. The door on the right is locked, so the group can only enter the door on the left. The room past the left door, in Ib's point-of-view, seems to be full of colorful bunnies, with a painting of a large pink one displayed in the center on the back wall. When Ib examines that painting, Red Eyes, Garry will comment with surprise, obviously disconcerted with something about that painting and the room. Mary, on the other hand, will respond with an opposing comment, believing that the painting is cute—which further disturbs Garry—before asking Ib for her opinion. The player can either have Ib agree with her or say that it's "pettable," both of which will strengthen her bond with Mary by one point, or have her choose the neutral third option.

There are two bookshelves in this room; reading the book, titled "Ruin of the Heart," on the shelf on the left side of the room will unlock it in the True Guertena Exhibit. The player should take note of the green bunny that stands out from the rest of the pink and white bunnies. Having Ib approach or walk past the green bunny will cause it to fall from its position and break, leaving behind a Violet Key, which Ib should obtain.

After Ib's group exits the room, the Flowers of Jealousy painting will suddenly grow some vines, separating Ib and Mary from Garry. A short conversation then commences, with Ib having a choice of saying that she doesn't want to leave Garry or saying that she'll be fine without him. Choosing the second choice will strengthen Ib's bond with Mary by one point, but it is not important if the player is aiming for the best ending, Promise of Reunion.

Regardless of which choice Ib chooses, afterwards Ib and Mary will enter the violet door on the right and explore the room past it, which is full of boxes and a few idle headless statues, among other various objects. Trying to open the door opposite the entrance will prompt Mary to recommend Ib to search through several of the boxes before trying the door. In the box near the top right corner of the room, Mary will find a palette knife. She will ask Ib if she thinks that the palette knife would be able to cut through the vines blocking Garry from them, to which Ib can answer that she doubts it or that they should try it out. Either way, the answer will not affect the outcome of the game. After exploring all the possible boxes, Mary will suggest going back to Garry. The lights will then flicker; once the lighting restores itself, a red headless statue can be seen blocking the entrance that Ib and Mary originally came through from. Mary will then order Ib to push it, yet after they both try pushing it together, the headless statue will not budge. Mary will then say that there's no other choice but to move on. Ib will be forced to exit the door opposite the entrance. In the next room, a silhouette of a person can be seen walking to the window, banging on it, and then leaving. A ball of red paint can be heard and later seen bouncing down the stairs before splattering into the wall at the bottom of the stairs. Once Ib finishes climbing the stairs, the Clown painting, which is missing its red nose, can be seen hanging on the wall at the top of the stairs. After Ib heads left, a set of three wall writings will appear, suggesting that going to a world without adults would be fun, likely directed at Ib and are potentially Mary's thoughts written out. After reading the wall writings, Ib should enter the door to the left.

Controlling Ib and Garry Separately[]

In the next room, still controlling Ib, the player should direct her to the save point and use it. An image of a blue rose can be seen on the ground nearby; having Ib step on it will change the point-of-view to that of Garry's. Similarly, images of red roses, which will be seen later, are the activators for switching back to Ib's point-of-view. But, first, the player should examine the room and take note of the surroundings in order for Garry to solve a later puzzle. The player should especially take note of the five cords hanging near the ceiling, especially of the one that's directly above Bashful Glance, the green painting with eyes.

After Ib steps on the image of the blue rose, the point-of-view will switch back to Garry, who will be seen standing where the two girls left him. He will show worry about the two but decide that he has no choice but to go back into the room where Red Eyes resides in order to find another way out. Unlike the innocent and naïve Ib, Garry sees the room in its true form, filled with disturbing blue dolls; the Red Eyes painting itself will also be different, portraying a larger version of the blue dolls that sit around the room. Upon examining the bookshelf on the right side of the room, Garry will discover a hole that he can use as an exit behind the shelf.

In the next area, there is a save point, which Garry should use. To the right of it is a locked door, and a triangular hole in the floor can be seen nearby. Near the bottom right of the room is an image of a red rose (to switch back to Ib's point-of-view), and at the top right corner of the room are five cords. The order of the cords in this room correspond with that of the cords in the room in which Ib is currently in. Pulling different cords will have different effects; pulling the leftmost cord will cause a Claw to emerge from the wall and attack Garry, causing him to lose a petal from his rose, pulling the cord that is second from the left will cause Garry to get attacked by gas, causing him to lose two petals from his rose, while pulling the rightmost cord will drop a mannequin head or a blue doll to the ground and will cause Garry's doom counter to increase by one point. If the player is aiming for the the best ending, Promise of Reunion, Garry should pull the cord that is second to the right. Doing so will cause a short cutscene in which Bashful Glance will remove itself off of the wall and place itself across the hole in the ground, forming a bridge for Ib and Mary to cross.

The player should then change back to Ib's point-of-view and save. Ib should head to the "bridge." There will be two options: to "stare intently," which virtually does nothing, and to ask if it's OK to cross. If Ib chooses the second option, Bashful Glance will look at the girls before closing its eyes in confirmation. Past the "bridge" is a box and a triangular object. If Ib examines the box, there will be something moving inside, and Mary will express her discomfort. Other than that, there's nothing else Ib can do with it. Ib should push the triangular object into the hole; doing so will cause the object to fall into the floor one level below, where Garry is currently on. Ib should then step on the image of the blue rose to change back to Garry's point-of-view.

The triangular object should now be in the area that Garry is currently in. Garry should push the triangular object into the triangular hole. The player can hear a click as the nearby door becomes unlocked. Before advancing, Garry should use the save point.

Now, both Garry and Ib can continue. The player can choose to control Ib again or to continue controlling Garry. This walkthrough covers the next steps controlling Garry first.

Past the recently unlocked door, Garry will arrive at a hallway where a blue doll will be sitting against the back wall. Wall text is scribbled next to the doll, denoting the message that the doll wants to convey to Garry. As Garry moves on, the blue doll can be seen at every turn of a corner, each time with differing wall text. At the end of the hallway is a door, blocked by the blue doll that is stalking him. Garry will become irritated and he will have to pick a choice between kicking it or moving it aside. Moving the doll aside is the safe option, as kicking the doll will add to Garry's doom counter. Kicking the doll also gives Garry less time to find the key and escape the Doll Room later. The door will remain locked until Garry reads the wall writing that appears next to it. Past the door is a larger area. Heading east, there will be an image of a red rose. At this point, the player should have Garry step on it to transfer back to Ib's point-of-view.

Ib should head left to head to the new area, which starts off as a thin hallway. Mary will start a conversation with Ib in the middle of the hallway. Mary will first ask Ib if Garry is Ib's father, to which Ib has two neutral choices to choose from, both different ways of denying Mary's assumption. Mary will appear to be happy that Garry isn't her father and proceed to ask Ib if her mom is nice, which also has two neutral answers. Mary will then hesitate for a bit before asking who Ib would choose to escape with, Mary or Garry, if only two of the group could leave the Fabricated World. There are three options. Having Ib pick Garry will increase Garry's doom counter by one point; having Ib pick Mary will strengthen Ib's bond with Mary by one point. The third option is neutral; Ib would say that she would sacrifice herself. If Ib chose Garry, Mary would become angry and state that the question was only hypothetical, assuring that Ib and Mary will definitely leave together. If Ib chose Mary, Mary would would become happy and assure that the both of them would leave together. If Ib chose to sacrifice herself, Mary will appear to be saddened by the former's answer. After Ib has chosen her answer, she should follow the path of the hallway to reach the next area.

In the next area, there are five rooms to explore. Red poisonous gas can be seen to the south; in order to continue past it, the puzzles in the current area (and the puzzles in Garry's area) must be solved first. There is also a locked door towards the right side of the area, which can be unlocked later after the puzzles are solved. The room on the bottom right has three mannequin heads, each on a separate table, and the Lady Without Her Umbrella painting. Ib has the option to take the mannequin heads off of the tables. Breaking all three mannequin heads would end up increasing Garry's doom counter by one point. The correct mannequin head to remove is the one in the middle, near the bottom left corner, and breaking the other two will cause Ib's rose to lose a petal for each wrong mannequin head broken. After removing the middle mannequin head, Ib and Mary will discover cracks on the ground next to the fallen mannequin head, with poisonous gas rising from the cracks. Before leaving the room, Ib should grab the key on a table in the lower-right of the room. Afterwards, the player should have Ib explore the room beside the painting Heavenly Thread. At the moment, the room is colorless, and here is a key on the other side of the gap. But first, Ib should go south from the colorless room to explore the last room. Mary will notice that there is something where text can be entered on the door. It asks for the name of the painting shown on the left, which is Marvelous Night. Inputting this name will unlock the door. Once inside, Ib should read the books in this room. Some of these include codes that will be used on Garry's side. On the far right of the back wall is a painting with a hole in the middle of it. Insert the Tree Key. It's recommended to save after this and to switch back to Garry's point-of-view.

The first room that Garry sees is locked. The room in front of Worry and Juggling is filled with red gas, which will reduce Garry's rose by one petal per step. Garry should head north towards a door with a plant on top. He should enter the room and read the books in there. The room beside that one is also locked. Garry should enter the room to the left of the Tree Room. He'll find out that he'll need to collect seven Balls of Paint to build a certain bridge. There is one in a hallway, one from Juggling, one in the Gas Room, two in the Tree Room, one in a blue doll, and one in the Doll Room.

The yellow paintball is located in the bottom-left corner of the main room, which appears after Garry has read the instructions for finding the balls of paint. The blue paintball is obtained by solving the puzzle for the Juggling painting, using the code 6223, which is the year that was mentioned in Juggling's article in one of the books.

To obtain the purple paintball in the Gas Room, Garry must first obtain the Red Umbrella in that room. Garry should enter the gas room and head straight to the right to find the umbrella. After taking it, he should leave the room and head towards the Fishing Hook painting. Garry should attach the umbrella to the hook. The player should now switch to Ib's point-of-view. Ib should take the umbrella from the Fisherman and give it to the Lady Without Her Umbrella. This will change the painting to Lady With Her Umbrella, and rain will start falling in the room. The player should now switch to Garry's point-of-view. In the gas room, Garry should head straight down towards the vase, then go to its left. Garry should use the vase to heal. Then, Garry should head towards the right side of the room, where a cord is hanging. Garry should pull the cord, causing the gas to dissipate. He should now pick up the purple paintball, found on the left side of the room. He may now exit the room.

The green paintball is found inside Essentials of Color, a book that is located in the Tree Room. After obtaining the green paintball, Garry should head to the upper-right part of the room to find the pink paintball. After exiting the room, Garry should head back towards the Gas Room but not enter it. Instead, he should examine the nearby blue doll that's sitting next to a locked door. Garry will be able to obtain the red paintball from it, so as long as he has read Mary's secret. The blue doll will then laugh and run into the locked room. Garry can now enter the room, but it is recommended that the player saves the game first before having him do so.

The white paintball is the last ball to obtain and is located inside the previously locked room, the Doll Room. After Garry obtains it, he will realize that the exit door is now locked. He will have to find the Small Key inside one of the blue dolls to escape the room before Red Eyes attacks him. The key's location is randomized and, thus, will not always be with the same doll across various playthroughs. The amount of time that Garry has to escape depends on whether or not he kicked the stalking blue doll in an earlier scene in the Violet Area. If the player chose to have Garry move the doll aside as instructed by this walkthrough, the amount of time allowed for escape is increased. If Garry managed to escape the Doll Room, Ib will be able to obtain the Brown Key from the Colorless Room. She should use this key to open the locked door to meet up with Garry. Mary will start to act strangely before they do, and once they're together with Garry again, Garry will advise Ib that Mary isn't what she seems to be.

If Garry didn't succeed in escaping the Doll Room, Mary and Ib will meet up with Garry inside the room. At this point, Garry would appear to be delusional, and Ib will have to attempt to return him to normal. Assuming the player has made the right choices for Ib to be able to save Garry, Ib should head back to Brown Area and to the area where red gas was blocking the way to a door. After having Garry push the headless statue out of the way, they can proceed to the new area, the Sketchbook.

Trivia[]

  • Red Eyes randomly makes appearances in the Cord Room and the Tree Room.
  • In earlier versions of Ib, after Ib met Mary, the flower vase was found to the south in an alternate corridor, instead of against a lower-right corner.
